thanks for your suggestions. I will try them shortly. In these weeks I almost gave up to it. But I will give it a go again: I never tried the settings you saggest.
So you Thinapped MS Word and MathType separately, not together. My fear is that in this way one misses the integrated menu that Mathtype adds to the Word standard menu. But I will see if this is true. In that case will be a pity, since some functionality is lost (for instance the creation of automatic numbering). In that case is not possible to make them work if one thinapps both of them in a single snapshot (this is what I was trying to do)?
I will try your method. Once done, I hope to give here a more precise feedback. I am also curious to know if other have succeeded with your settings or similar ones.

Update:
I tried your method. Here my results:
1. the MT addon menu is properly shown.
2. The equation are created ok. In my case in Tools//Objects.... I do not have obviously MathType as possible choice, since MT has been created after having thinapped Word 2003. But the creation works even if one choses just Microsoft Equation 3.0 (MT is its substitute and launches properly).
3. Insead if I attempt to edit an MT equation I have often the warning below. This was a similar problem I had before asking help (i.e. no MT edit)
