vSphere 5.1 Licensing : vCPU rights

Hi all,

I am just wondering about the vCPU rights per vSphere edition.

In standard edition the vCPU right is 8.

Does this means:

                1) VM can only have max of 8 socket with 1 core per socket

                2) VM can only have max of 8 socket BUT the number of core per socket can be more

I m having some VM that would require up to 16 cores, can the standard vSphere license fit or should i go for an enterprise one ?
